Having too many large logs laying around may not seem like a big problem, but it is
if you’re a tree service company that processes and sells them. That was the
situation for AllScapes Landscaping & Tree Service in Exeter, Rhode Island.

We sold them a Black Splitter S1X in October 2020 and checked in on November 10
to see how it was running. Although the company had only run the attachment for
about 15 hours, they had already cleared out one yard and moved on to the next.

AllScapes is a father and son operation specializing in tree service, landscaping,
sitework, and hardscapes throughout Rhode Island, southern Massachusetts, and
parts of Connecticut. The company was looking to step up production in response to
growth in its tree service business in recent years. Shon Cuthill, primary operator of
the S1X, believes the growth has been driven by homeowners looking to remove
dangerous trees with so much volatile weather in recent years.

AllScapes was breaking up logs for its Multitek wood processor with chainsaws and
hydraulic log presses. They take in 95 percent of the wood from their projects,
including white oak, red oak, and maple, and process and sell all of the wood chips.
With a substantial backup of big logs piling up and a processor capable of cranking
out up to 5 cords per hour, AllScapes needed to take action.

AllScapes reached out to another Black Splitter customer, Running Brook Farms of
Connecticut and received positive reviews. That appreciated referral resulted in
AllScapes buying the S1X, which was the right model for its Yanmar SV100
Excavator.

While the S1X has been busy in the yard, AllScapes expects the attachment to be
useful for busting up large stumps that its mini excavator can’t handle. It will also be
used to more easily load trucks.

Shon has run other brands of splitters and is impressed with the Black Splitter’s
performance so far. He says, “I ran a friend’s log and stump screw and this is
definitely faster and handles bigger work.”
